Car: 97 Civic CX

My check engine light came on the day i took my car for emissions testing.

Ive checked all my hoses etc. Im thinking maybe its an O2 sensor or something.

Im curious if there is a way to tell what is wrong without hooking the car to a scanner.

http://www.c-speedracing.com/faq/06.php <-- how to check check engine light codes. A paper clip works too, anything to connect the two wires in the plug. (what the codes mean is on the linked page at the bottom)

you can also go to an auto parts store and ask if they check them. The local Autozone here checks them for free.

tsmith, was the cel on after or before the emission test?

did you overfill gas? loosen the gas cap and re-tighten it (like) 10 turns. Confused

check the dtc (cel) what code you have and than diagnose it from there.

let us know what dtc you came up with.

get the code before you reset or clear the ecu/ecm. Exclamation

missfires can be randomly set for having bad gas or can be a sign of something going bad.
I'd do a quick tune up, replace the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and set the timing. Then reset the ECU and fill it up with good fuel, then see what happens.
If they come back it could be the ignitor or coil going out on you.
There are tests for each, let me know if you'd like to know how to do it.

whatz the milage on your car?

how are you plugs? white, burnt or over heated with black tips? can yoiu still see a "V" grooved on the tip?

hows your air filter?

hows your cap/rotor?

hows your spark plug wires?

hows the fuel filter?

hows the timing?

how are the valve? ticking?

like relic1 mentioned, maybe its time to replace your fuel filter, cap/rotor, spark plugs and (maybe?) plug wires.

also perform a super tune emission service to it which is clean the tb (throtlle body) and clean the injectors.

NOTE: use all oem Honda parts only!

you can do all this by yourself if you can and its realy fun. but if not tell you local honda shop to do a basic tune-up to your car. but remember a honda shop will charge you an arm and an leg where you can do it at home over a few beers and all you spend was on the parts. Mr. Green
